FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is denying claims that his agency’s upcoming rule changes will put an end to net neutrality. Those rule changes are to be made public today, and today’s Wall Street Journal reported that the FCC will allow service providers to charge content providers higher rates for faster delivery.
Wheeler did not deny those reports, but he did say that his agency is preserving the Open Internet Rule and that all Internet content will be subject to the same rules. His statement is below:
“There are reports that the FCC is gutting the Open Internet rule. They are flat out wrong. Tomorrow we will circulate to the Commission a new Open Internet proposal that will restore the concepts of net neutrality consistent with the court’s ruling in January. There is no ‘turnaround in policy.’ The same rules will apply to all Internet content. As with the original Open Internet rules, and consistent with the court’s decision, behavior that harms consumers or competition will not be permitted.”
