LUCENT PROVIDING CHIPS TO MOTOROLA

BERKELY HEIGHTS, N.J.-Lucent Technologies Inc.’s Microelectronics Group announced it will provide semiconductor chips for several Motorola Inc. two-way messaging units, in development.

The chip’s marked features include low-power consumption and the integration of more functionality, said Lucent. The new mixed signal processor is a further generation of Lucent’s POMP-15, developed almost two years ago and currently used in Motorola’s Tenor, PageFinder and PageWriter voice paging and text messaging devices.

Lucent expects to start sampling the new mixed signal processor platform to Motorola by the end of the year, said Rob Franzo, manager of messaging and digital mobile radio marketing for Lucent’s Microelectronics Group. The chips will be compatible for use in all Motorola’s ReFLEX and InFLEXion-based products, noted Franzo.

Motorola expects to start distributing the next generation voice paging and two-way messaging products by mid-1998, said Mario Rivas, vice president and general manager for Motorola’s Advanced Messaging Group.

The next generation chips will offer increased range of reception for pagers, better in-building coverage, longer battery life and will allow for building smaller devices, said Franzo.
