TAIPEI, Taiwan-Taiwan’s dominant telecommunications carrier has issued an equipment tender for a Digital Cellular System for 1800 MHz.
Deadline for bids is April 8. The equipment is valued at $350 million.
The operator is Chunghwa Telecom, which operates two island-wide systems: an Advanced Mobile Phone Service network with 700,000 subscribers and a Global System for Mobile communications cellular network with 500,000 subscribers.
Recently, the government of Taiwan awarded eight new wireless licenses to private companies to increase telecom competition. Chunghwa received an island-wide DCS license, even though it didn’t participate in the process, according to authorities.
Chunghwa wants to build a DCS network that will serve 1 million subscribers, and could use 889 base stations. The operator hopes to launch commercial service the second half of this year.
