LYNCHBURG, Va.-L.M. Ericsson recently supplied a digital trunked radio system to the city of Las Cruces, N.M.
The 800 MHz system provides the city’s police officers with encryption technology that prevents people with scanners from listening in on official radio transmissions, city officials said.
City departments all have their own separate talk groups, including police, fire, public works and land surveyors. But they can still communicate with each other if that need arises, the city said. In-building transmissions, which used to be a problem, are possible with the new system, according to city officials.
The Ericsson network is interfaced with the conventional system of the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department, Ericsson said. That level of interoperability will let the neighboring jurisdictions communicate in emergency situations.
