MESSENGER SERVICE USES CELLSCAPE

BOSTON-Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile announced it has signed a deal to provide its Cellscape service to Walsh Messenger Service Inc., a delivery company serving the New York City metropolitan area.

Beginning in October, Walsh Messenger will replace the pagers it currently uses with the Cellscape service.

Cellscape will allow 150 of Walsh’s messengers to have real-time access to dispatch information on the company’s intranet. They will also have information such as delivery times and package details that will help improve productivity and customer service.

“Realizing we needed to upgrade our communication system, we decided to outfit our couriers with smart phones, which could be used as a cellular phone for direct communications with dispatchers and as a computer that enables two-way data transmission,” said Joseph Pryor, manager of Walsh Messenger. “As a result of this investment, we anticipate better customer service based on more timely and accurate communications.”

By using browser-enabled smart phones, Cellscape customers will have access to voice service, two-way messaging, e-mail and a variety of information services such as airline updates and stock quotes.

Cellscape will be commercially available by the end of this year in all of BANM’s major markets as well as those where the company has signed Cellular Digital Packet Data interoperability agreements, the company said.
