NEW YORK-3607 Communications Co. announced it plans to begin offering Code Division Multiple Access digital cellular service commercially early next month in Las Vegas.
The company also announced second quarter earnings.
The Las Vegas CDMA launch, available to existing and new 3607 customers, would be the second in the United States, after a limited rollout that AirTouch Communications Inc. began in mid-May in Los Angeles.
“In Las Vegas, we’ve been testing and perfecting CDMA technology, and we’re excited about offering the service in one of the country’s most highly penetrated mobile phone markets,” said Dennis Foster, president and chief executive officer of the company.
3607, which was spun off from Sprint Corp. in early March, reported that its second-quarter revenues totaled $274.2 million compared with the same quarter in 1995 when revenues were $208.9 million.
The company also reported operating cash flow of $102.9 million for the second quarter, up from $67.7 million reported for the comparable period last year. Net income was $24.3 million, compared with a loss of $758,000 in the second quarter of 1995.
The cellular carrier closed the second quarter with 1.75 million customers, having added 246,525 during the first six months of this year.
Also during the second quarter, 3607 announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire the cellular operations of Independent Cellular Network. ICN has interests in 20 markets in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia that cover a population of 3.2 million.
“The ICN markets are adjacent to our existing markets, and the acquisition will instantly provide expansion of coverage for our customers,” Foster said.
