WASHINGTON-The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association’s board of directors authorized $6.7 million for the current fiscal year 1997 for a five-year study of possible health risks associated with the use of wireless phones.
The money is paid into a deposit-only escrow account managed by the independent scientific organization Wireless Technology Research L.L.C., CTIA said. WTR’s research program is set by a panel of independent scientists.
The wireless industry, through CTIA, pledged $25 million over five years to fund health risk research after safety questions were first raised in 1993. The association said this latest grant brings the total amount of funding to $17.5 million over a three-and-a-half year period.
Thus far, CTIA said no adverse health effects resulting from the use of wireless phones have been reported by researchers.
