WIRELESS LOCAL LOOP PREDICTED AT 60 MILLION USERS BY 2000

WASHINGTON-Developed and developing countries will have 60 million wireless local loop subscribers by 2000, says a recent report published by Economic Management Consultants International Inc.

The report, Wireless Local Loop: Opportunities in the Global Marketplace, predicts, however, that from 2000 to 2005, developing markets will significantly outpace developed markets for WLL growth. By 2005, developed markets are projected to have 54 million WLL subscribers, while developing markets will have nearly three times that amount at 148 million, EMCI said. The study concludes that the rapid growth in developing markets will be the result of the continued need for telephony.

Due to the dominance of the United States, North America is projected to be the leading developed region for WLL, accounting for 41 percent of developed countries WLL demand in 2005, the study says. Western Europe and Asia are next, projected to account for one-third and one-quarter of developed country WLL demand by 2005, respectively, EMCI said.

By 2000, EMCI predicted that in developing countries, cellular and proprietary technologies will dominate as WLL platforms, accounting for 90 percent of demand.
