MOTOROLA TO SUPPLY AFRICAN GSM SYSTEM

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Motorola Inc.’s International Cellular Infrastructure Division said it is supplying digital Global System for Mobile communications cellular phone equipment to Tanzania and Lesotho, Africa.

Motorola said it recently deployed GSM self-contained compact In-Cell base stations in Tanzania as part of the digital cellular system for Tritel Telecommunication Tanzania Ltd. Tritel will provide service for up to 10,000 subscribers in eastern Tanzania, including Dar es Salaam, Unguja, Pemba and Zanzibar, Motorola said. Siemens supplied D900 switching equipment for the system.

In Lesotho, Vodacom Lesotho Ltd. has contracted to install Motorola’s GSM In-Cell base stations and Siemens AG D900 switches.

The cellular network, which will launch commercial service this April, will have the capacity to serve 2,000 subscribers in Maseru, Buthe Buthe and surrounding areas, Motorola said.
