WASHINGTON-An Illinois circuit court judge has dismissed scientist Dr. George Carlo as a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed by a former Bell Atlantic Mobile manager against Motorola Inc. and the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association.
On March 2, Debbra K. Wright filed charges against Motorola, CTIA, Carlo, the Health and Environmental Sciences Group Ltd. (of which Carlo is president), and CTIA employee Ronald Nessen in Cook County, Ill.
Wright, a cellular phone user, has been battling a brain tumor. Her lawsuit states that Motorola and CTIA were aware of the health hazards associated with using cellular telephones, but hid the alleged problem from consumers.
Carlo leads the CTIA-commissioned scientific study into the potential hazards of cellular telephones. Carlo’s group, Wireless Technology Research LLC, only began contracting with scientists last year for the five-year study.
Illinois Judge Paddy McNamara has ruled that Wright did not produce evidence that Carlo or the HES Group were involved in the alleged conspiracy outlined in the lawsuit, according to Carlo’s attorney, James Baller of Washington, D.C.
Baller said Wright added a complaint against WTR in September, and the judge is expected to rule on that in March.
