William Lenahan is celebrating his one-year anniversary as president and chief executive officer of Ram Mobile Data L.P. by initiating a change in strategic direction for the packet data carrier.
He recently announced a new Strategic Network that provides a selection of hardware, software and network options to customers allowing them to obtain “no compromise” solutions tailored to their specific needs.
“We believe that Ram’s Strategic Network offers companies a genuine alternative to the confusion in today’s wireless world,” Lenahan said.
The core of every Ram solution today is the Mobitex packet radio technology. Ram said it provides Mobitex coverage to more than 92 percent of the U.S. urban business population.
But in moving from a network-driven to a solutions-driven marketing strategy, Ram said it will now offer its customers access to a variety of complementary networks including circuit-switched cellular, paging, satellite and dial-up services on the public switched telephone network.
“A total solution means just that,” said Janet Boudris, Ram’s senior vice president of strategic marketing. “Customers will have the option to select Ram to hold the operational responsibility for the connections between the customer and the additional services.”
Although the company has developed relationships with hardware manufacturers and software developers, it has not yet announced any alliances with other wireless network service providers.
Yet the company claims it will be the only wireless provider to offer customers access to 100 percent of their mobile organization with the ability to transfer any size file once the Strategic Network is fully implemented. “We found that companies want to cover their entire field organization all of the time, no matter where they are located,” Boudris said. “We also found that companies would like us to address the occasional file transfer needs of their mobile employees.”
Ram Mobile Data is based in Woodbridge, N.J., and reportedly has 36,000 subscribers currently on its Mobitex network.
In related news, Megahertz, the mobile communications division of U.S. Robotics, has introduced the AllPoints Type II PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) modem designed to operate on the Ram network.
