IFR Systems Inc. has named Dr. Samual Kyehung Lee director of business development for the Pacific Rim. He will also be the management contact for all IFR distributors in mainland Asia, Southeast Asia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Dr. Lee joined IFR in 1987 as an electrical design engineer. Most recently, he served as staff scientist and spent the last five years in international development.

Anthony Sutton has joined IFR as director of sales. Sutton will oversee domestic and international sales and marketing of IFR products. Prior to joining IFR, Sutton was a sales manager for Schlumberger Technologies Inc. and served more than 11 years as product manager for Motorola Inc.

The board of directors of the Specialized Mobile Radio Wireless Operator Network announced the appointment of Richard Hafla of Teton Communications Inc. as chairman of the board and Alicia Clemens as executive director. Hafla has more than 15 years experience in the telecommunications field and is participating in an SMR WON committee responsible for drafting comments to the Federal Communications Commission.

Clemens’ experience includes work with several nonprofit associations through organizing member service administration, legislative contact and marketing efforts. She is working in the SMR WON office on a full-time basis and will be building member services and benefits.

Richard Grimes has been appointed director of real estate and construction for Los Angeles Cellular Telephone Co. Grimes is responsible for directing the BellSouth Corp.-AT&T Corp. joint venture’s site acquisition, governmental entitlement, property management and expansion of its wireless network. Prior to joining L.A. Cellular, Grimes spent six years in the commercial real estate industry. He served in the retail properties division of CB Commercial Real Estate Group Inc.

John Lankes has been named vice president of wireless data communications at SNET Mobility Inc. Formerly vice president of marketing for California-based AirTouch Teletrac, Lankes will oversee the development of new SNET LinxData wireless products and services as well as wireless data sales and distribution channels.

Albert Grimes has been appointed president and chief operating officer of National Telecom. Grimes aided in founding and developing the name “Cellular One,” which was subsequently licensed to nonwireline cellular systems in the United States to distinguish them from the cellular system operated by the local wireline telephone company. In 1983, Grimes became president of Washington, D.C./Baltimore Cellular One, the first Cellular One operation in the United States.

The company also has announced the addition of two executive vice presidents. James Craig, formerly director of wireless communications services for MCI Communications Corp., will serve as executive vice president and chief financial officer. Filling the position of executive vice president and chief marketing officer is Roy “Cotton” Markert. Markert was recently a principal in a personal communications services cell site acquisition venture that was acquired by AT&T Corp.

Connie Becker is now microwave materials business segment manager at Rogers Corp. Becker, who was promoted from marketing services manager, has worked at Rogers for 28 years. In her new position, Becker will manage small order/customer commercial business for the Rogers microwave materials unit in Chandler, Ariz.

EchoStar Communications Corp. appointed Barbara G. Sullivan vice president of marketing. Sullivan will lead the company’s team of marketing professionals in the national introduction of the company’s direct broadcast satellite television system. She will also be responsible for marketing EchoStar’s other business enterprises worldwide. Prior to joining EchoStar, Sullivan was vice president of marketing at CommNet Cellular Inc., where she headed a marketing operation responsible for 56 wireless telephone markets in nine states.

Innova Corp. named Robert Hamilton Jr. vice president of engineering. In this newly created position, Hamilton will oversee the design and development of Innova’s microwave radios for the wireless communications industry. Previously, Hamilton served as vice president of engineering at SSE Technologies, a microwave satellite radio systems company in Fremont, Calif.

Preferred Networks Inc. named William Bang its new director and announced several appointments to vice president and financial positions.

Bang is a 30-year veteran of Motorola Inc., having last served as corporate vice president. He was selected by Telocator (now called the Personal Communications Industry Association) in 1993 as the first recipient of the “chairman’s award” and was elected vice-chairman of the PCIA Science and Education Foundation at the PCIA 1994 Seattle Convention.

David Freeman is now vice president of corporate development. Freeman previously served as vice president of sales and marketing for PNI and was a co-founder and vice president of TGA Technologies Inc. in Atlanta.

Filling the vice president of sales and marketing position is Mark Dunaway. Prior to joining PNI, Dunaway was vice president of sales and marketing for Dial Page Inc., which was recently acquired by MobileMedia Corp.

PNI has appointed Mark Jones vice president of legal affairs. Jones, a certified public accountant, was an attorney with Bodker, Ramsey & Andrews PC., a law firm in Atlanta, and served as a manager in the tax department of Arthur Andersen & Co.

Kim Smith Hughes is now chief financial officer. Hughes has served as controller for PNI since 1994 and was CFO for Dental Research prior to joining the company. She has more than 14 years of experience with Big 6, start-up and Fortune 500 companies.

James Wall has been named treasurer of AirTouch Communications Inc. Wall will supervise banking and treasury, investor relations, corporate finance and investment and risk management. Prior to joining AirTouch, Wall was corporate vice president and treasurer at ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc. and served as vice president and treasurer at Ultramar Corp.

Cue Network Corp. appointed David Schreiman chief financial officer of the company and its subsidiaries, Cue Paging Corp., Accqpoint Communications and Pinpoint Communications.

Prior to joining Cue, Schreiman was a senior audit manager at Price Waterhouse in Orange County, Calif. His responsibilities included assisting with public offerings, providing advice on internal controls and managing due diligence for acquisitions and divestitures.

Blanche Cheeley is now Sprint Cellular Co.’s retail sales manager for Greensboro and High Point, N.C. Cheeley, who was promoted from account executive, is responsible for sales representatives in the Greensboro and High Point business offices, Sam’s Club and Kelly’s.

Jack Plating has been named president of the New England/Upstate New York region of Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile. Plating replaces Tom Bartlett, who was named president and chief executive officer for Bell Atlantic International Wireless Inc. Plating, who will be located in the company’s regional headquarters in Woburn, Mass., will be responsible for sales, marketing, network systems expansion, finance and administration in the region.
