ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Hutchison Telephone Co. Ltd. launched what it says is the world’s first commercial Code Division Multiple Access digital cellular phone system in Hong Kong.
Hutchison plans to migrate customers from cellular analog Advanced Mobile Phone Service to CDMA digital throughout 1996 and 1997. The CDMA system, built and installed by Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group has been under trial since December 1994.
The Illinois equipment manufacturer installed 9,600 cell sites and 2,500 switches. Motorola said the new network is “operating well and providing stable service.”
Hong Kong is a competitive digital marketplace, with five different analog and digital technologies being used. Motorola said it has shipped 400 commercial cell sites worldwide and will ship more than 700 cell sites by the end of the year.
