ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.-Pilipino Telephone Corp. awarded Motorola Inc.’s International Cellular Infrastructure Division a $270 million contract to expand and enhance its Mobiline cellular phone system, said Motorola.
The initial phase of the multi-year contract will replace metropolitan Manila’s current Advanced Mobile Phone System and U.S. Time Division Multiple Access dual-mode system with Motorola’s digitally enhanced narrowband network. AT&T Network Systems Inc. supplied the AMPS/TDMA system.
Under the contract, Motorola said it will install SC 9600 cell sites and EMX 2500 switches. SC cell sites support AMPS, NAMPS and Code Division Multiple Access radio access technologies in a single cabinet, Motorola said. The company also said that NAMPS was being used for easy migration to CDMA later.
The Mobiline cellular network-currently serving 130,000 subscribers in greater Manila-will be able to serve more than 500,000 customers when completed.
According to Motorola, Piltel is the largest cellular provider in the Philippines, which is one of the fastest growing cellular markets in Asia. The company said last year Piltel replaced its AMPS system in the Viasayas and Mindanao regions with Motorola cell sites and switching equipment.
Mobiline is Piltel’s nationwide cellular mobile telephone system. Piltel also operates Beeper 150, a nationwide paging system, and other wireless services throughout the Philippines.
