CTIA’S CIBERNET DIVISION ASSIGNS FIRST SID NUMBER TO AT&T WIRELESS UNIT

WASHINGTON-The first system and billing identification codes for personal communications services have been assigned to AT&T Wireless Services by Cibernet Corp.

Cibernet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association, which urged the assignment of codes so PCS carriers could proceed with negotiations for intercarrier roaming and billing agreements with other wireless providers.

“Cibernet is uniquely positioned to assume the role of systems identification code administrator for all commercial mobile radio services systems,” said CTIA President Tom Wheeler.

Cibernet volunteered its services to the Federal Communications Commission two months ago to administer the numbers.

The company has established the Ciber record publication, which includes all manufacturers’ codes, and the company intends to put out the Cord electronic dial-up wireless system database in the future.

“Assigning the first PCS codes marks a dramatic step in building the wireless future. There has been a growing demand by PCS providers to move ahead in assigning these codes so they could move forward in making their systems a reality,” Wheeler said.

Cibernet has said it will make information and assignments available on the same terms and conditions to all parties, regardless of whether the operator is a CTIA member or participates in other Cibernet activities.
