DIGITAL CELLULAR NETWORK COMING TO JAPAN IN 1997

ATLANTA-GTE Personal Communications Services has become a 4.5 percent partner in Japan-based Digital TU-KA Tohoku Co. Ltd., which plans to begin operating a 1.5 GHz digital cellular system by 1997 in Sendai, Japan, and other major cities of the Tohoku region.

GTE is a 3 percent partner in Digital TU-KA Tokyo Inc., owns 4 percent of TU-KA Phone Kansai Inc., 2 percent of TU-KA Cellular Tokai Inc., 4.25 percent of TU-KA Kyushu Inc. and 4.5 percent of TU-KA Chugoku Co. Ltd. The six companies plan to provide cellular coverage to a population of 95 million.
