The top three mobile operating systems control over 90% of the OS market, making it increasingly difficult for competing platforms to gain traction, according to Jumptap’s MobileStat monthly data. While Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android OS remains in the top spot, with 38% market share, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iOS platform has better click-through rates, according to the Jumptap data.
Jumptap culled the data from more than 83 million users on its mobile marketing network. Figures from June show Android in the top spot, followed by iOS, with a 33% market share and Research In Motion Ltd.’s BlackBerry OS taking the third position, with 22% market share. The iOS platform delivers the best click-through rates at .78%, followed by Symbian at .50% and then Android at .47%.
Drilling down into the Android OS across devices, Sony Ericsson Communications L.P. Android users had the highest click-through rates, at .54%, followed by LG Electronics Co. Ltd. with .40% and Samsung Telecommunications Ltd. with .39%. Advertising performance is uniform across the top four U.S. carriers, Jumptap said.
However, Android is adopted more in the South and Southwest parts of the country, while Apple’s OS does better in the Northeast and Midwest.
