TAIPEI, Taiwan — The topic of Taiwan and China jointly building an undersea communication cable was the center of a heated debate during a briefing session before the Communications Committee of the Legislative Yuan yesterday, according to local media.
The National Communications Commission Chairwoman Su Heng and Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Kao Chang both appeared before the Communication Committee when the issue of national security was raised as the reason to suspend the discussion until further clarification from the Defense Department and National Security Bureau were heard by the Committee.
At the center of the debate was the possibility of eavesdropping at the cable connection point on the mainland’s side of the infrastructure, as well as the single-calling rate initiative for Taiwan’s outlying islands that had been in discussion for more than 2 years.
