As its BREW developer conference kicks into high gear today, Qualcomm Inc. announced a handful of efforts designed to entice a broader array of players into the mobile content field.
–Qualcomm took the wraps off its new “Plaza” effort, which the company said is a “widget ecosystem that leverages Qualcomm’s expertise and success from the proven BREW ecosystem, giving publishers, developers and operators the ability to open up the mobile Internet to subscribers and monetize it for operators and content providers alike.” Qualcomm said Plaza would rely on open standards for widget development, thereby enticing entrenched wireless players as well as new entrants.
–The company also said it scored a major deal for its BrandXtend technology; Universal Music Group will use BrandXtend to offer content directly to consumers through its artist Web and WAP sites, CD packaging and its GetMusic.com portal. “BrandXtend provides UMG with the tools, services and flexibility necessary to take their mobile efforts to the next level with more merchandising and direct marketing tools,” said Brian Dunphy, senior director and head of brand and affinity relations for Qualcomm Internet Services.
–Finally, Qualcomm announced a “Cryptographic Extension” for its BREW application download service. The company said the technology will provide enhance security for BREW developer’s wireless applications aimed at government users.
