SCARBOROUGH, Ontario-Canadian wireless provider Telus Mobility said it launched its CDMA2000 1x EV-DO-based network in a handful of urban centers. The initial markets include Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The carrier said it has plans to extend coverage next year.
Telus Mobility said the network, which was built with network infrastructure provided by Lucent Technologies Inc. and Nortel Network Ltd., provides average download speeds of between 400 kilobits per second and 700 kbps with peak speeds up to 2 megabits per second.
In connection with the network launch, Telus Mobility also unveiled its Connection Manager Software. The offering includes built-in acceleration software that uses compression technology and one-click access for wide-area and local-area wireless networks.
Customers can access Telus Mobility’s EV-DO network using a Sierra Wireless Inc. AirCard 580 PC card; UTStarcom Inc. Pocket PC 6700 smartphone; Kyocera Corp. KPC650 PC card; or Research In Motion Ltd. BlackBerry 7130e.
