BURBANK, Calif.-Subscribers of Sprint Nextel Corp.’s new Power Vision service can access video content from “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” the carrier announced.
Sprint users can view long-running comedy sketches from the show as well as the previous night’s monologue. Two new clips will be added daily, and four will be available at any time.
The content is the latest offering from NBC Mobile, which produces about two dozen two- to four-minute daily clips exclusively for wireless users. Content from the broadcaster’s mobile division includes news, original features and in-depth features.
The agreement also highlights the importance of star power in mobile video. The Fox Network recently killed “24: Conspiracy,” a mobile-exclusive version of its hit show “24,” in the United Kingdom after the offering failed to gain viewers. Network executives blamed the failure on the absence of 24 actor Keifer Sutherland.
“Today’s announcement reinforces our commitment to empowering consumers and providing our content on whatever platform they choose,” Deborah Reif, president of NBC Universal Digital Media, said of the Leno announcement.
Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless’s Vcast subscribers can access The Weather Channel Now on their handsets. Users can view forecasts, updates and severe weather alerts produced exclusively for wireless phones, and Weather Channel on-camera experts and personalities will deliver on-location coverage for the service.
