On Monday news broke that Apple had a big surprise in store for punters this coming weekend to mark its 10 year retail anniversary. With talk of black curtains, hardware locked in back rooms ready for installation and employees pulling all nighters, many have been speculating whether Apple has a brand new device up its fruity sleeve. Others, however, claim it could be nothing more (or less) than a brand new NFC payment system.
According to word on the MacNN street, Apple’s iPod touch-based sale terminals apparently went offline for a whole day, purportedly for “maintenance.”
Those same sources also claim Apple’s retail employees have been roped in to “assist in installing TBD devices” to help “as the retail segment of Apple grows.”
So far, so cryptic, but the clincher could be in the clue that the iShops are said to be getting new tables with different wiring, as well as cash wraps built in, which sources in the know claim could be for NFC payments.
Perhaps this means the new iPhone will have NFC capability after all? We’ll keep our ears to the ground and update you with news as we hear it.
