KDDI to stream FM radio programming to smartphones

TOKYO (Nikkei)–KDDI Corp. (9433) is teaming up with 52 FM radio broadcasters to stream programming via the Internet to its smartphone and cellular phone customers.

The Lismo Wave service will be launched Wednesday, giving listeners access to radio programming from stations nationwide for a monthly fee of 315 yen. Most radio programs and songs offered by the stations, except in cases where permission for commercial and song copyrights cannot be obtained, will be streamed through the service.

Those living in such areas as Hokkaido and Okinawa prefectures will have real time access to radio stations in Tokyo instead of being limited to local programming.
