PARIS-Alcatel Corp. said it won a contract with WiMAX Telecom GmbH to provide the first commercial broadband wireless network using the new WiMAX standard in Austria.
WiMAX Telecom is a subsidiary of Swiss WiMAX Telecom AG and was the sole provider to obtain nationwide WiMAX frequencies in Austria at an auction in October 2004.
Alcatel said the first phase of deployment is set for completion this month and will enable a panel of users in Austria’s southeastern counties of Styria and Burgenland to access the Internet with symmetric data throughput of up to 2 megabits per second.
WiMAX Telecom said that once high-speed data services are available for low-density environments and public services, WiMAX Telecom will connect enterprise and residential users on a larger scale and provide broadband wireless access in urban and suburban Austrian territories.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
