Digital Fountain reports Nokia license

FREMONT, Calif.-Digital Fountain Inc. unveiled a deal to license its Forward Error Correcting technology for wireless multimedia broadcasts to Nokia Corp., the software developer said last week.

The world’s largest handset manufacturer will use Digital Fountain’s DF Raptor technology, which protects third-generation wireless broadcast video and file transfer services from packet loss. The software is designed to ensure the efficient delivery of data without requiring packets to be sent more than once, conserving bandwidth.

With the announcement, Nokia becomes the first DF Raptor licensee. Digital Fountain also sells its technology to satellite radio service providers, U.S. military organizations and security companies.

The agreement marks a major win for Digital Fountain, which notched a blockbuster deal earlier this year when the Third Generation Partnership Project tapped the company’s technology as a mandatory component of its Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service.

“Getting Nokia was crucial,” said Alan Jacobsen, Digital Fountain’s director of marketing. “Nokia is a tremendous endorsement.”
