Latin Americans like to communicate, especially Brazilians. That’s why social networks such as Facebook or Orkut have so many Brazilian subscribers. Another aspect – as well as consequence – is the growth of mobile devices embedded with access to social applications.
Pyramid Research noted in a recent report that mobile devices will become the platform of choice for accessing social networking sites in Latin America. According to the firm, the mobile social network market continues to develop and the region is expected to register 116.8 million mobile social network users by 2015.
Pyramid Research found that 96% of Latin America’s online population accesses some social network, a number that is expected to grow to about 98%, or 229.1 million users, by 2015.
Vinicius Caetano, senior analyst at Pyramid Research explained in statement that “with strong adoption of social networks and a culture that highly values the ability to be connected to others, Latin America provides fertile ground for opportunities and growth in mobile social networking.”
This could spell a great opportunity for mobile vendors in the region. IDC noted that smartphone penetration across Latin America is only at 15%, which leaves lots of room to grow for the device segment that has embraced social network platforms.
