Telefónica Colombia to invest $500M in 2012

The Colombian unit of the Spanish group Telefónica will receive about $500 million from its parent company in 2012 from for investments, focusing on expanding its infrastructure for data services, fixed and mobile telephony. The investment is similar to the company’s total this year.

Movistar, the mobile brand of Telefónica, is No. 2 in market share in Colombia, which closed the third quarter with 47.7 million lines. Comcel leads in both prepaid (67.2%) and postpaid (56.1%), followed by Telefónica Móviles with 32.5% in postpaid and 20.3% in prepaid. Colombia Móvil has 11.3% in postpaid and 11.9% in prepaid.

The carrier is also aims to expand its broadband access, which today is about 600,000, as well as increase speeds.

Telefónica Colombia had 13.1 million accesses and US $1.6 billion in revenue in the first nine months of 2011, up 4.9% compared with the same period in 2010. Latin America and mobile data were the main drivers of Telefónica Group’s revenue during the first nine months of 2011.

The Spanish company, the world’s fourth-biggest mobile operator by connections, closed the period with revenue of U.S. $63.7 billion. Telefónica Latin America reported an 8.1% rise in revenue compared with the same period last year, accounting for 46% of the group total; mobile data revenues rose 19.6%.
