A new study by market research firm Infonetics Research showed that carriers are embracing cloud computing as a key corporate strategy. On the same day that Brazilian operator Oi announced its Smart Cloud platform, América Móvil unveiled plans for cloud computing services across subsidiaries in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina and Brazil.

“We made the announcement simultaneously … to all countries,” Ney Acyr, executive director of Brazilian operator Emratel, told RCR Wireless News. “The new cloud offering is an initiative to expands our portfolio.”
Acyr added the new offering will contribute to the convergence of América Móvil’s telecom and IT solutions for enterprise customers, which currently comprises storage and servers solutions, virtual servers, unified communications, telepresence and e-mail.
Actually, what América Móvil is doing is moving to a cloud model using existing solutions. “Several corporate services that were offered only in a traditional way now they are available as applications in the cloud,” Acyr said. “So customers do not need to install and storage, for example, files or related data.”
Investments and future revenue expectations were not disclosed.
Currently, Claro in Argentina has seen the sale of advanced services account for 15% of the total enterprise market’s volume. Claro counts about 1,000 customers. “The investment in the technology infrastructure to be unveiled in cloud amounts to $15 million,” said Victor Cortez, director for business market at Claro Argentina, in a statement. “Local customers are increasingly looking to companies such as Claro to provide them these kind of services and products,”
América Móvil said it will roll out cloud platforms to other markets across the Western Hemisphere.
