Gartner Symposium: 2012 Latin American IT spending lower than 2011 prediction

Gartner forecasts that information technology spending in Latin America in 2012 will be a little less than the amount predicted for 2011. Last year, Gartner forecasted that IT spending in Latin America would reach U.S.$303 billion by the end of 2011. However, during this week’s Gartner Symposium (read all pieces) in São Paulo, the consultant firm said that Latin America IT spending will reach U.S.$298 billion by the end of 2012, increasing to U.S.$368 billion by 2016.

The reduction, as Donald Feinberg, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, explained to RCR Wireless News, reflects the decrease in economic growth forecasts.

The predicted Latin American IT spending is approximately 29% of the United States’ total of U.S.$1.016 trillion in IT spending in 2012, increasing to 31% by 2016. “Latin America has maintained its position as second only to the Asia Pacific in growth and size,” Feinberg said.

Brazil alone, which is the largest country in Latin America, is expected to close 2012 with U.S.$126.3 billion in IT spending, increasing to U.S.$134 billion by 2013. The devices sector (including PCs, tablets, cellphones and printers) is among the top segments that will drive Brazil’s IT spending growth, and device spending in Brazil is expected to be 7% higher in 2013 than 2012, reaching U.S.$24.3 billion next year.

The Asia-Pacific region is expected to achieve U.S.$689 billion by the end of this year, reaching U.S.$917 billion by 2016, while the Eastern Europe forecast is U.S.$144 billion for 2012 and U.S.$175 billion for 2016. The Middle East and Africa together might achieve U.S.$233 billion this year and U.S.$286 billion by 2016.
