Sky Brazil launches broadband services based on TD-LTE

DirecTV’s Latin America subsidiary Sky Brazil has become the first Brazilian company to launch 4G services. The country’s largest satellite TV service has entered the broadband wireless market offering 4G wireless service based on TD-LTE (time division duplex long term evolution) network.

It is available in the country’s capital Brasília metropolitan footprint, including neighborhoods. Sky expects to extend the offering over the coming year to other cities in Brazil where it holds licenses to operate data communication services.

DirecTV is also exploring opportunities to offer wireless broadband services in other parts of Latin America. In statement, Bruce Churchill, president of DirecTV Latin America, said that by offering fast, high-quality broadband service at an affordable price, the company will open up new growth opportunities in Brazil and throughout the region.

The equipment will be provided by Nokia Siemens Networks in a three-year contract. NSN was selected as end-to-end TD-LTE solution for DirecTV Latin America’s TD-LTE network rollout.

NSN has provided the TD-LTE radio network based on its Flexi Multiradio Base Station. The company has also provided its FlexiPacket Microwave transport platform and Evolved Packet Core, which is part of its Liquid Core architecture. In addition, NSN has provided its CPEi-lte 7212, a wireless router built for indoor use that provides fixed wireless connectivity to TD-LTE services via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Nokia Siemens Networks has also provided its NetAct network management system to provide consolidated configuration, monitoring and network optimization, as well as One-NDS that unifies fragmented subscriber data into a single database for one or multiple network applications, creating a consolidated view of subscriber profile information.
