Verizon taps Motorola for early LTE device following Droid success

Verizon Wireless’ (VZ) LTE network might be using a new technology, but so far there is nothing new about the companies that will build the devices running on that network. Motorola Inc. (MOT) has been tapped to release one of the early, if not the first, smart phone to run on Verizon’s new 4G network. It will in all likelihood run on Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android operating system as is the case with all of Motorola’s latest smart phone releases.
The carrier’s COO John Stratton made the first official mention of Motorola as one of Verizon’s early LTE device providers in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
“Over last 13 months, they have done a very good job in supporting our business and have worked their way up into almost a preferred vendor,” Stratton said. “They have been driving our Droid strategy.”
Motorola has previously only said that it would make LTE capable devices next year, but gave no further details beyond that. Of course, Verizon hasn’t been shy about its plans to show off new LTE smart phones and tablets in two weeks at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
