Microelectronics sees spectacular growth thanks to smartphones and data consumption

Microelectronics is still seeing impressive growth according to the latest figures from Strategy Analytics.

“The strong revenue reports which Strategy Analytics saw in April show continued compound semiconductor market expansion,” said Eric Higham, director of the Strategy Analytics GaAs and Compound Semiconductor Technologies Service.

“Growth in this industry is broadly-based as both gallium arsenide (GaAs) and silicon manufacturers are showing strong year-on-year revenue gains,” he added.

Smartphones can be credited with much of the growth, according to another Strategy Analytics director, Asif Anwar, who claimed that increasing data consumption is driving the development in consumer electronics and networks.

This is especially good news for the leading firms in the microelectronics field, including RFMD, Skyworks Solutions, Fairchild, Fujitsu, Hittite Microwave, TriQuint Semiconductor, Soitech and WIN Semiconductors.

It’s not just smartphones pushing the industry forward, however, with a plethora of commercial and military applications requiring gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium nitride (GaN), Silicon carbide (SiC) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies, according to the report.
