WASHINGTON, D.C. – The continuing drama surrounding LightSquared’s attempts to launch its terrestrial/satellite network continues to unfold in the court of public opinion, and more importantly in the halls of the Federal Communications Commission.
The FCC is in the midst of trying to decide if LightSquared should be allowed to commercially launch its service, despite evidence that the spectrum to be used will cause interference with commercial GPS systems. For its part, LightSquared has said that the interference issue is being caused by GPS devices not equipped with the proper filters, and in addition has filed a new spectrum plan that would see the company initially use a different chunk of its spectrum in order to reduce interference issues in the near term.
While all of this is still to play out, LightSquared has also remained busy signing up partners to its wholesale business model as well as signing a 15-year, spectrum hosting agreement with Sprint Nextel Corp. (S)
During a recent visit to the nation’s capital, RCR Wireless News talked with some of the players involved in the proceedings as well as industry observers to get their opinion on how this issue might be resolved.
