Leap Wireless’ (LEAP) Cricket Communications operations unveiled a halo device in the Huawei Mercury smartphone set to retail at the carrier for $250.
The Android-powered device sports a 4-inch screen, 1.4 GHz processor, 8-megapixel rear camera and VGA front camera and support for Leap’s 3G network. Leap noted that the device requires its $55 per month unlimited smartphone plan that includes unlimited domestic calls, caller identification, voice mail, call waiting, three-way calling, call forwarding, messaging, e-mail and data services. The carrier does throttle network speeds when customers use in excess of 1 gigabyte of data service.
While the device provides a high-end model for Leap, it also allows Huawei to move up market with a device sporting specifications in line with those from more established device makers.
“We’ve been able to establish ourselves as a player in this market by providing affordable smartphones, and we’re building on that foundation with devices for the high-tier market now,” said Jiangao Cui, president of Huawei Device USA.
