Confirmed: SensorLogic M2M platform acquired by Gemalto

SensorLogic, a leading machine-to-machine (M2M) cloud application development platform, has been rumored for weeks to be the subject of an acquisition by Paris-based mobile and digital security giant Gamalto. The companies confirmed the deal tonight. The union may form a third major powerhouse in the M2M development platform market.

SensorLogic is a “platform as a service” provider that facilitates remote tracking and management of assets and devices embedded with sensors. The middleware company seeks to help wireless carriers find new sources of revenue as well, SensorLogic said in an RCR Wireless profile in August 2010.

Gemalto has a long-standing interest in mobile and M2M. Its acquisition of SensorLogic is likely to be one of many consolidation events between telecom, mobile, security, commerce and machine to machine technology in the coming months, as the importance of M2M grows substantially.

Jeremy Cowan at M2MNow first reported this month that SensorLogic was in talks with Gemalto after investors reportedly balked it putting more money into the company; the 9-year-old firm had raised $5 million at the end of last year. Cowan wrote last week, “If this deal is confirmed this will bring a significant new player into the platform market, competing with the likes of Axeda and Qualcomm’s nPhase.”

SensorLogic announced a partnership with Sprint at the end of October and already had a partnership with AT&T in place.

SensorLogic has said that use of its Platform as a Service reduces time to market for asset tracking technologies by as much as 90%.
