Report: 75% of new handset buyers switch brands

Smartphone and feature phone buyers outside the iOS world are ready and willing to switch manufacturers when upgrading, according to a survey of more than 50,000 people who bought new phones within the last six months. Mobile Posse‘s on-screen survey covers more than 100 non-Apple devices made by 10 different device manufacturers. Mobile Posse’s carrier partners are Verizon Wireless, U.S. Cellular, Cricket and MetroPCS.

Three out of four people surveyed switched manufacturers when buying their new phone. Only a third of handset buyers walked into a retail store knowing what device they wanted. Among those younger than 35, almost 35% had a specific model in mind, while just 29% of those over 35 knew what they wanted. 34% of male buyers had a device in mind, versus 30% of female buyers.

Outside the nation’s top ten media markets, almost half the phone buyers said they had “no idea what phone model they wanted” when they set out to purchase their phone. Even in the top markets, 42.3% of respondents said they had no plan about what phone to buy.
