You know the prepaid space is getting competitive when it draws a change from postpaid stalwart Verizon Wireless, which today tweaked its prepaid smartphone offerings to better appeal to that growing market segment.
Beginning today Verizon Wireless will offer customers unlimited voice calling, messaging and 500 megabytes of data transmission for $60 per month, or for $70 per month will throw in 2 gigabytes of data.
The catch? Well, those plans are currently limited to 3G devices running Google Android, BlackBerry’s BlackBerry and Apple’s iOS operating systems, though the carrier did note that customers would be able to bring an already owned smartphone to the rate plans.
It should be noted that the new plans undercut its current postpaid pricing for smartphones that charges $100 per month for unlimited voice calling, messaging and 2 GB of data, however those plans do allow for use of all smartphones, including LTE-enabled devices. The postpaid plans also include a device subsidy that is lacking for new devices purchased for the prepaid plans, which in the case of the HTC Rhyme is $440.
Just nine months ago, Verizon Wireless started offering unlimited talk, messaging and 1 GB of data transmission for $80 per month without a contract and a limited handset lineup. That plan superseeded its previous plan that charged $125 per month for unlimited calls, messaging and “unlimited” data.
