CTIA 2013: T-Mobile US bolsters international data offers

LAS VEGAS – T-Mobile US’ aggressive meanuvers in the consumer space have overshadowed most of its activities leading up to and moving beyond its recent merger with MetroPCS. However, the carrier has also maintained a focus on bolstering its enterprise offerings, the latest move of which is the rollout of international data roaming plans.

The carrier said that beginning May 29 it will offer flat-rate data roaming across 119 destinations beginning at $25 per month for 150 megabytes, up to $120 per month for 1 gigabyte. For those traveling to Canada and/or Mexico, T-Mobile US offers 150 Mb for $15 per month and 1 GB for $70 per month. Those prices do not include “taxes and fees.”

The carrier tackles the overage issue with these plans the same way it does domestically by throttling data speeds once a customer hits their bucket limit. T-Mobile US previously offered 500 Mb of non-throttled data access, and unlimited access at curtailed speeds, for $50 per month across 28 European countries. That offer followed one set up by rival Verizon Wireless that offered customers international data roaming at $25 per month for 100 Mb of data transmission in 120 countries across Europe, South America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada.

T-Mobile US, which is majority owned by German telecom giant Deutsche Telekom, has maintained a healthy focus on the enterprise space. At last year’s CTIA event, the carrier announced data plans targeting domestic usage as well as plans to hire up to 1,000 new sales associates tasked with generating business in the enterprise market.
