Motient adds IBM customers
RESTON, Va.-Motient Corp. said it added 1,400 new customers through its lucrative deal with IBM Corp.
IBM will deploy Research In Motion Ltd.’s 857s to its customer service engineers, which marks an extension of the eight-year relationship between Motient and IBM.
“During the time I have worked with Motient we have never had a system failure,” said Dennis Sundberg, senior program manager for IBM’s printing systems division. “Motient has been rock solid for more than five years.”
The deal offers some hope for Motient, which has lately suffered from dwindling profits and weighty debt.
IPWireless completes 3G broadband wireless trial
SAN BRUNO, Calif.-IPWireless Inc., a broadband wireless technology company, said it has successfully completed the field test of its third-generation broadband wireless network solution.
Trial participants in Greensboro, N.C., used a palm-sized portable modem to access the Internet from laptops and desktops at speeds that IPWireless said rival current DSL and cable modem offerings.
Leap launches Slice of Nashville
SAN DIEGO-Leap Wireless International Inc. launched its Telephone Entertainment Network in Nashville, Tenn., with its Slice of Nashville service.
The Slice service, originally launched in Chattanooga last month, offers customers voice clips of information to their wireless phones. Information includes local news, community events, weather, sports and entertainment, and is delivered before a dialed call is connected.
Brightpoint lowers expectations
INDIANAPOLIS-Brightpoint Inc. lowered its revenues and earnings expectations for the quarter ending June 30, 2001.
The company now expects revenues to fall between $450 million and $470 million and a loss of 12 to 14 cents per diluted share.
Actual results and expectations for the rest of 2001 will be released on July 26, Brightpoint said.
