Coriant discusses benefits of SDN implementation for mobile networks and we look at news of the week

NFV and SDN continue to garner increased interest from telecom operators looking to gain greater efficiency and agility from their operations. But are those benefits enough to justify the financial and workforce investments?
On this week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check, we spoke with Bill Kaufmann, group manager of SDN planning at Coriant, to provide some insight into what benefits mobile network operators stand to gain from deploying virtualization technology.
This week we also touched on a couple of NFV and SDN related news items, including a recent test performed by Overture with partners Brocade, Fortinet, Spirent, Ixia and Supermicro reiterating past performance claims for a multi-vendor service chain of virtual network functions running on common off-the-shelf servers again showing line rate throughput of 1 Gbps with claims of low latency and low jitter.
You can check out a previous interview with Overture on the initial release of the performance numbers from NFV/SDN Reality Check – Episode 14 here.
Also on the topic of service chaining, Alcatel-Lucent’s Nuage Networks division said it recently completed an evaluation and testing program with Telefonica Business Solutions that included service chaining of VNFs in a multi-vendor SDN environment.
Make sure to check out next week’s NFV/SDN Reality Check when we again look at some of the top news stories of the week and speak with Adam Saenger, VP of product development and management at Level 3, on using SDN to bolster Internet-based services.
