I’m Martha DeGrasse with the RCR Wireless Mobile Minute, brought to you by Juniper Networks. Smartphone maps that don’t require an Internet connection are coming to Android and iOS from Nokia. The company is releasing its Here mapping tool in the Google Play store and says that next year it will be available on the iPhone for the first time since 2013.
The Nokia maps can be saved to your device and you can search locations on a saved map, even if you lose your Internet connection. The app also has map data for almost 100,000 indoor locations worldwide.
Nokia no longer makes smartphones or tablets — it sold that business to Microsoft earlier this year. Like BlackBerry, Nokia was finding it hard to compete in the smartphone space but it does not want to lose its valuable smartphone software. Like BlackBerry, it is now adapting its software for Android and iOS.
Nokia held onto its map unit when it sold its mobile device business to Microsoft and the company recently appointed a new president of that division — Sean Fernback came from rival mapping service TomTom.
Our featured employer this week is MasTec Network Solutions. The company is hiring a DAS project manager to work in Columbia New Hampshire, a Tower Foreman to work in Union Missouri, and a tower technician to work in Centennial Colorado.
