Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group has been awarded a contract for more than $10 million to expand the narrowband advanced mobile phone service in the Dominican Republic. The contract with the private telephone company, Tricom Inc., will expand that company’s cell sites to a total of 18 and increase subscriber capacity on the island to more than 5,000 Motorola said.

Hong Kong Telecom announced “G-Force,” a service guarantee plan that allows customers to claim free line rental should the company fail to meet its service standard. G-Force covers installing telephone lines, resorting telephone service, providing international direct dial service and connecting new mobile phones and pagers.

Westinghouse Electric Corp. has won a contract with Telecommunicaciones de Mexico to build the MOVISAT control center for the Solidaridad L-Band Satellite Communications System. Telecommunicaciones de Mexico is a part of the Mexican government’s office of Secretaria de Communicaciones y Transportes. The contract is valued at $18 million, Westinghouse said. The ground network supplied by Westinghouse is scheduled to be operational by the end of 1995. It will connect the North American continent, from Calgary, Alberta, to Cancun, Mexico, Westinghouse said. MOVISTA will interconnect with public and private telephone networks as well as Mexico’s cellular networks, enabling customers that travel out of cellular range to switch to satellite coverage.

Telsim, operator of the Global System of Mobile communications network in Trukey, said a contract valued at $20 million for GSM infrastructure has been awarded to Motorola Inc.’s European Cellular Infrastructure Division. Telsim is buying digital base transceiver stations to enhance an expand existing coverage in the nation’s capital, Istanbul. Deliveries will begin immediately, with the first enhancement phase in Istanbul expected to be completed in February.

L.M. Ericsson has received a bulk order agreement from Vodafone Ltd. in the united Kingdom to supply Global System for Mobile communications cellular switching equipment. The equipment will be used to expand Vodafone’s existing network to be able to add another 700,000 subscribers. Ericsson did not place a dollar value on the contract.

Clearnet Inc. has agreed with BT Bank of Canada and Bank of Montreal to extend the deadline to Jan. 31 for the banks to provide definitive documentation pertaining to a Canadian $85 million senior bank facility they agreed to provide. The previous deadline, as stated in the company’s prospectus for its initial public offering, was Nov. 30. Clearnet intends to use the bank financing and proceeds of its recently completed IPO to fund the build-out of its integrated digital wireless network. In other news, Clearnet said it has purchased the assets of Motorola Canada Ltd.’s 800 MHz specialized mobile radio network in Manitoba for an undisclosed amount.
