UTO TECHNOLOGY ALLOWS MIGRATION TO DIGITAL ONE CHANNEL AT A TIME

A new venture company is introducing a technology designed to increase channel capacity for two-way radio networks and other wireless communications systems.

Irving, Texas-based Unique Wireless Developments L.L.C. is a partnership formed in February by Unique Technologies International L.L.C. and Wireless Systems Ltd., a Bristol, England-based independent research and development company. UTI will market and exclusively distribute the Dynamic Channel/Multi-Carrier Architecture technology, while Wireless Systems will engineer the technology.

UTI, which holds controlling interest in Unique Wireless, was founded last November by Steven E. Fulford, David L. George-both formerly of Uniden America Corp.-and Lenbrook USA Corp. in a mission to create a multi-carrier architecture, Fulford said.

Initially, DC/MA technology will be implemented at the 800 MHz frequency band for specialized mobile radio and enhanced SMR applications, but DC/MA also is applicable in the two-way radio VHF, UHF and 900 MHz bands, and can be implemented in personal communications services, cellular and wireless cable networks, said Fulford. Unique Wireless’ technology is compatible with existing FM equipment and can be integrated into existing wireless systems, the company said.

To increase overall channel capacity, many wireless companies are converting their systems to a digital format, which requires a hefty investment in new technology and architecture installation.

DC/MA is innovative for traditional two-way radio applications because it is able to increase system capacity by “migrating one channel at a time,” said Fulford. DC/MA operates using digital technology and software-embedded digital signal processors for voice and data in an analog-based system. Transmission in and out of the radio system is an analog signal, but the communications’ processing is digital, Fulford explained.

Fulford, previously corporate vice president and general manager in Uniden’s Commercial Communications Division, is UTI’s president and chief executive officer. George, who was corporate vice president of engineering and operations in the same Uniden division, is UTI’s executive vice president in charge of engineering and technology.

Prior to leaving Uniden, Fulford and George commanded the company’s 220 MHz project which, with Wireless Systems, sought solutions to increase channel capacity for operators who now are limited to only 5 kilohertz of spectrum.

Unique Technologies continues to support Uniden’s 220 MHz product, but has a broad agenda for future wireless business worldwide.

Boston-based Lenbrook USA is part of Pickering, Ontario-based Lenbrook Group, a public company involved in distribution channel management, wireless communications networks, remote power systems, brand development and direct marketing. Lenbrook manages the legal and human resource functions of UTI and Unique Wireless.
