QUALCOMM PUSHES BUCK SCHEDULED DATES TO OFFER CDMA-BASED EQUIPMENT

SAN DIEGO-Qualcomm Inc. pushed back its previously announced mid-1995 availability schedule for Code Division Multiple Access technology-based equipment.

Qualcomm said its cellular infrastructure equipment will be available during the last quarter of this year and in early 1996 for large-market deployment. The company’s second-generation cell site modem chip is available for commercial use today.

Initial quantities of Qualcomm’s infrastructure equipment for personal communications services will become available in the first quarter of 1996, the company said.

“We’re not as much on track as we hoped, but this equipment will still be available in time for use by PCS providers,” said Molly Foerster, Qualcomm’s investor relations spokeswoman.

Qualcomm said its dual-mode analog/CDMA cellular phone will be available for volume commercial shipments this fall. The company said its single-mode CDMA phone should be available by first quarter 1996 for volume commercial shipping.

All company products include Qualcomm’s PureVoice option, which supports 13 kilobits per second voice quality.

San Diego-based Qualcomm is a strong proponent of CDMA-based technology for the cellular and PCS industries. The company has been criticized, however, for not getting product to market quickly enough for some carriers.
