TESTING PACS IN CANADA USING HUGHES EQUIPMENT

TORONTO-Bell Mobility said Hughes Network Systems Inc. agreed to provide equipment for a test of Personal Access Communications technology in Toronto and Montreal.

The Canadian operator is testing three proposed personal communications services technologies to prepare for the release of new spectrum at 2 GHz for PCS.

The PACS test, representing the low-tier approach, will start soon and is scheduled to run through July, the company said. PACS is a microcellular, low-cost and low complexity approach to PCS, providing service through notebook computer-sized radio ports throughout the service area.

Hughes has extended the application of the technology enabling it to operate in moving vehicles, according to Bell Mobility. The high voice quality of PACS also makes it a good fit for wireless local loop applications, the company said.

Bell Mobility’s test of high-tier Code Division Multiple Access technology using Qualcomm Inc. equipment was completed April 12 and the results are being analyzed, Bell Mobility said.

The test of high-tier PCS 1900 technology, for which Northern Telecom Ltd. supplied the equipment, should be completed by the end of April.

“At that point, we’ll undertake an analysis of the test data,” said Brian O’Shaughnessy, vice president of technology for Bell Mobility.
