NORTEL SNARES CONTRACT TO DELIVER TDMA NETWORK

DALLAS-Northern Telecom Ltd. will provide Star Digitel with a Time Division Multiple Access digital cellular phone system valued at $24 million under the terms of a three-year supply agreement. Star Digitel is a wholly owned subsidiary of Star Paging (International Holding) Ltd.

“Star Digitel will provide these systems to its customers in China where it has established a strong presence by installing seven cellular systems already,” said Star Paging Chairman Nelson Wong Kam Fu.

Nortel and Star Digitel have worked together since 1992, when Nortel first supplied Star Digitel with analog cellular equipment.

“Cellular service revenue for the company increased 165 percent in 1994,” Wong said. “The number of mobile phone subscribers using the systems in 1994 grew by more than 100 percent. Having established a strong presence in this market, Star Digitel will bring more and more contributions to the Star Paging Group.”

Ming Li, senior managing director of Nortel China, said increased sales are expected as a result of the new agreement for TDMA digital cellular systems.
