SNET Cellular Inc. awarded AT&T Network Systems Inc. a contract valued at $35 million to supply and install an Autoplex System 1000 for SNET in its Rhode Island and the Bristol, Mass., area markets, which operate under the Cellular One brand name.
Autoplex provides customers fraud protection and the ability to use multiple phones with the same phone number and will allow SNET Cellular to upgrade cellular service to either Code Division Multiple Access or Time Division Multiple Access technologies, AT&T said. The Autoplex cellular platform will support personal communications services, added the company, and Cellular Digital Packet Data can be integrated into the platform.
Included in the installation-expected to be complete by year’s end-are AT&T’s 5ESS(R)-2000 digital switch, an executive cellular processor, 35 AT&T Autoplex Series II cell sites and other transmission, power and microwave products.
WiLL coming to Hungary
Telular Corp. received a contract to supply a custom version of its Phonecell SX product to Motorola Inc.’s Cellular Infrastructure Group for deployment in wireless local loop projects in Hungary.
The Phonecell terminals will operate with the Extended Total Access Communications System standard with Motorola cellular transceivers, said Telular. The fixed wireless terminal subscriber units will be part of Motorola’s WiLL wireless local loop system.
“Hungary is clearly leading the market in its utilization of wireless local loop technology for basic phone service,” remarked William L. DeNicolo, chairman of Telular.
Anticipating nationwide deployment, the Buffalo Grove, Ill., company also said it plans to provide cellular pay phones to Motorola and its customers.
The first phase of deliveries are scheduled to begin in January and are anticipated to continue for two years. Initially, Telular will manufacture product at its facilities in Puerto Rico, said the company, with plans to move production to Hungary in the first quarter next year.
Telular noted the Hungarian venture will increase monthly production between 50 percent and 100 percent.
