SEOUL, South Korea-The Republic of Korea has postponed selection of licensees for seven new telecommunications services including personal communications services, second-generation cordless telephony and trunked radio services until after the general election for members of the National Assembly-scheduled for April..
The selection of 30 new licensees was originally planned to be completed by the end of this year. In addition to PCS, CT2 and TRS, licenses were to be awarded for international telephone services, leased line services, paging services and wireless data communications services.
The Korean government is reportedly under pressure from the ruling party to avoid any political controversy that might be generated by the licensee selection process until after the election.
Sources said three national PCS licenses are being considered again by the Ministry of Information and Communications.
