SEATTLE-AT&T Wireless Services introduced a prepackaged phone that is available in stores and activated by calling a 1-800 number and receiving credit-card verification.
The telephone costs about $40 with an access charge of $20. The monthly charge includes two hours of free off-peak calling per month. However, the phone must be activated within seven days of purchase and requires a 12-month service commitment. Monthly billing is done through a credit card.
The company said industry trends indicate consumers are purchasing additional cellular phones for family members as a personal convenience and safety tool. Local demographics also indicate more women are searching for this sort of product, AT&T said.
AT&T also unveiled its caller ID and message waiting indicator for digital cellular customers.
