Cellular One said it introduced FreedomLink Personal Communications System to businesses in western New York. The system operates as an extension to an existing office phone system by using very low power cellular frequencies to communicate with the office’s existing phone system. This enables an employee to freely travel with a FreedomLink handset throughout an office, factory, college campus or any other large complex and still be able to place or receive calls at any time, the company said. Cellular One is offering the service in Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany, Utica, Watertown, Ithaca and Auburn.

Shaffer & Associates Inc. of Houston-a communications industry company in the field of site acquisition, installation, engineering and tower reconstruction-has joined with National Telecommunications Advisors LLC, a spinoff of a nationwide networked commercial real estate appraisal consulting firm, to form Wireless Acquisitions Inc. The equally owned corporation will provide turnkey services to the wireless industry from site acquisition through construction.

Spectrian, a manufacturer of radio frequency amplification systems, announced Qualcomm Inc. awarded it an $8 million order for Code Division Multiple Access power amplifiers. Qualcomm will integrate Spectrian’s power amplifiers into its CDMA base station equipment for personal communication systems. Spectrian developed the first CDMA amplifier for Qualcomm in 1989.

Steinbrecher Corp. said the company’s DataCell Cellular Digital Packet Data mobile data base stations have been deployed in Seattle and Las Vegas as part of AT&T Wireless Services’ ongoing deployment of packet data service. AT&T said the DataCell base station successfully passed its quality assurance this summer and will be deployed in the production network, beginning with the Seattle market.

U.S. Intelco Wireless Communications Inc. is targeting a new line of evaluation and implementation services to smaller independent telephone companies that plan to enter personal communication services markets. The company said the services will help the companies determine which PCS options best suit their needs, and then support implementation of that option. USIW’s evaluation services include PCS financial modeling, business and financial plans and local market analysis. Implementation services include auction training and reporting, financial support and pre-engineering design.

Motorola Inc.’s Advanced Messaging Systems Division said the Federal Communications Commission has approved manufacturing and distribution of Motorola’s MessageDUET, a wireless desktop message composer and receiver for two-way paging networks. The MessageDUET allows users to type alphanumeric messages with custom reply options on the MessageDUET’s full-sized keyboard, view the message on the 80-character display and send it to a Tango two-way pager. The product also provides message status and notifies users of replies with its built-in alert.
